Romhack Facts

  • There are 460 stars, including red and green stars.
  • There are 185 "Courses" defined as levels with at least one star.
  • There are 87 "Hubs" defined as areas (like lobbies) that lead to at least 3 other locations.

Getting Started

To play B3313, you'll want to get Parallel Launcher. Install it, setup your ROM folder path, then visit this page on romhacking.com. Find the newest patch at the top of the list of patches under "Versions" and click "Play now". Don't use the top-most play button, as this can sometimes load a patch that isn't the newest.

Important: For the best experience, it's recommended to go in blind for at least the first hour of gameplay, if not for an entire first stream. After that, you can use this guide to begin making progress.

If you want to hit the ground running, there are basic starter save files available on the "Gamesaves/Other" page. This can give you a head start when streaming.

Helpful Info (very mild spoilers)

  • Red stars are necessary for "progression". If you start from a new save, get a red star ASAP (bowser fight through the double doors). Once you get 1 red star, most/all of the "map" opens up to you.
  • In Parallel Launcher, check the "Use Widescreen (stretched)" checkbox, and once in-game press pause and Z + R to enable widescreen. You'll need to do the last step, the in-game widescreen setting, each time you launch the game.
  • Never enter Vanilla Basement at night.
  • Some areas are blocked off until you get 10 stars.
  • Learn how to do the side flip + wall kick maneuver early, it helps reach high places in many cases.
  • There are events that will only happen during the daytime or nighttime. This is based on IRL time, and night starts at 8pm.
  • There is a yellow switch. Do not press the yellow switch.
  • The game has an "Act 1" mode that is enabled by sitting on Mario's stretchy face at startup until he says "n-n-n-n-n-no!", then pressing start to continue loading the game. This mode changes various things in the game.
  • There are over 20 locations in this game called some variant of "Lobby". Examples include Parallel Lobby, Nebula Lobby, Plexal Lobby, etc.
  • Please walk quietly in the hallway.
  • The star readouts on the pause screen are not relevant and can be ignored.
  • Green stars only begin to appear after collecting 120 total stars.
  • Never collect a white coin. Or do.

Gameplay Tips and Tricks

  • There are at least 5 variants of the main lobby that all look nearly identical. Each time you press Start + A, you cycle through 3 of these main lobby variants. To keep track, watch the number on the left door when cycling lobbies.
  • Sometimes, entering a double door will lead somewhere different depending on which of the two doors you actually enter.
  • Levels can be anywhere. This includes paintings, pipes, invisible warps, and various holes. Don't be afraid to explore, the game now respawns you outside the level when you get a star or lose a life.
  • If you lose your hat, remember where you lost it. You'll need to go there to get it back.

What is the "AI"?

  • The game has an "AI" that will "react" based on actions you make.
  • Once you collect 2 red stars, the AI begins affecting the game.
  • The game difficulty changes based on how you play. Enemy variations and types, purple coins (which do damage), etc can be altered.
  • This AI tracks very detailed behavior of the player, including how they die. For example, if you die due to a "skill issue" like falling in quicksand, it might reduce the number of purple coins it spawns.
  • The AI is also intentionally responsible for the occasional texture glitches.
  • Your health regenerates over time early on. After enough progress, that benefit is removed.
  • Bowser and other bosses scale along with the difficulty metric.
